Khaudum is home to large elephant herds, the rare roan antelope, lions, hyena and wild dog... combined with the challenging drive to reach this remote corner of Namibia, its rustic bush-camps and untouched-wilderness atmosphere, Khaudum has a strong attraction for all adventure-loving travellers! The eastern Caprivi is known for its prolific birdlife including slaty egrets, white-rumped babblers, chirping cisticolas, swamp boubous, coppery-tailed and Senegal coucals, and pink-throated longclaws. Excellent game-viewing in the region includes elephant, hippo, buffalo, zebra, waterbuck, kudu, red lechwe, sitatunga, impala and predators such as lion, leopard, hyena and jackal.

Visit various places of interest in the Windhoek, enjoy local cusine, and stay at a comfortable guesthouse in the city. We travel north-east next day to a restcamp beyond Grootfontein, stocked with a variety of antelope, zebra and warthog. Continue east next morning to Tsumkwe and on to Khaudum Game Park. We spend three nights in the rustic campsites of this remote Park.

We now turn our attention to the Caprivi region. From our campsite on the Kavango River we visit Mahango Game Reserve - this small park is well-known for its wildlife and birds. Leaving here we travel through Bwabwata Game Reserve to Kongola, taking a 4x4 sand track to our secluded campsite in the Susuwe Triangle area, known for its excellent and varied wildlife. After two nights spent here, we continue to a camp in or near the Mudumu Game Reserve. Mudumu is a Caprivi game park of dense savannah and mopane woodlands covering 1,010km² and known for its elephant and hippo populations, zebra, buffalo, various antelope species and birdlife.

We continue on to Mamili / Rupara Game Reserve, covering 320km² and the largest wetland area with conservation status in Namibia. With its network of water channels, reed-beds and tree-covered islands, it is one of Namibia's most remote and beautiful wilderness and wildlife reserves. Our bushcamp on the Linyanti River will be our base for two nights; a point where elephant, buffalo and lion are known to cross from Botswana's Okavango region, and where the lush grazing makes it an excellent spot for seeing impala, red lechwe and zebra.
Note : Should it not be possible to access Mamili we will spend one night camping alongside the Kwando River, and two nights in Mudumu Game Reserve.

Part of the allure of the Khaudum Game Park is that it's even more remote and rugged than one expects, and we were very pleased to be in the calm and re-assuring company of Chris, owner of Navigators and guide 'par excellance'. The Caprivi was also just magical - lazy nights next to the fire, varied wildlife and birds, lush vegetation alongside gently-meandering rivers... All too soon our holiday was at an end; we wish it could have lasted forever!
